I am particularly concerned that the proposed rules fail to require health and ecological safety testing or mandatory labeling, which poses possible risk to the environment, and also deprives the public of the ability to know and thus to make choices about they are eating. Regardless of scientific and other arguments and/or conclusions on all sides of the issues relating to genetically engineered foods, and indeed, because there is debate and the issues are unresolved, people should have the right to be informed whether foods being considered for purchase and consumption have been genetically engineered. It is clear that people of intelligence and good will, and whose positions are not guided by pure economic/profit/political considerations, would fully agree. My specific comments and requests also include the following: 1. FDA rules should mandate pre-market testing regarding short-term and long-term environmental impact 2. FDA rules should mandate pre-market testing regarding short-term and long-term health effects and nutritional character of genetically engineered foods 3. FDA rules should mandate labeling of genetically engineered foods as being genetically engineered 4. FDA rules should mandate labeling of genetically engineered foods regarding the environmental impact 5. FDA rules should mandate labeling of genetically engineered foods possible toxicity 6. FDA rules should mandate labeling of genetically engineered foods regarding the health/nutritional character of the food items 7. FDA rules should mandate a letter of notification prior to marketing of a genetically engineered food Thank you for you consideration of and inclusion in formal comments records of these comments.
