From: Gerald Fluhrer [lanier@coldreams.com] Sent: Tuesday, March 27, 2001 3:47 PM To: fdadockets@oc.fda.gov Subject: Docket 00N-1396 & Docket 00D-1598 FDA, It is appalling to me that in the past it has been allowed that hormones given to dairy cattle to improve milk production do not have to be clearly stated on labels as being used in the milk which I purchase. Regarding genetically engeneered foods, I would hope that this obvious type of attempt to undermine my individual right to know what it is that I am eating and to be able to make my own informed decision regarding what I will eat, will be stopped by: Requiring testing of genetically engeneered foods to ensure their safety before allowing them on the market; that ALL such food will be clearly labled as such (so that I as a consumer may decided whether or not I wish to consume such foods, and any possible ill effects from such foods can be traced back to the fact that they were genetically engineered); and that genetically engineered food is not a secret kept from the consumer, but an open fact. If it is safe, then let time and patience and the free will of consumers prove its safety and acceptance as a viable food. Thank you for considering my position, Gerald Fluhrer
