FDA Commissioner Dockets Management Branch (HFA 305) Food and Drug Administration 5630 Fisher's Lane, rm. 1061 Rockville, MD 20852 RE: Docket No. 00N-1396, and 00D-1598 Dear FDA, I am astonished by your proposed new policies on genetically engineered foods. The newest Roper Poll indicates that 70% of Americans want labeling of GE foods. That includes me, and that is the absolute minimum. Properly, these creations should be viewed as self-replicating potential threats. We outlaw computer viruses, but not potentially insidious and unstoppable biological Trojan Horses that could trigger fatal allergies or have unforeseen long-term health and environmental consequences. Please explain the logic of this position. (I know the FDA is not in charge of computer viruses. Thank God, I say, if these proposed regulations are a model of how they would be dealt with.) Making money is the professed purpose of corporations. Maintaining the highest standards of public health and safety is incompatible with this goal. To allow the corporations to develop products that will maximize their profits without regard for public safety, and then to freely distribute these into our bodies through the food supply system, without allowing us even a choice through knowledge (labelling), is simply abusive of basic rights of freedom. Contemplating living under these rules leads me to feel that I live in a corporate profit-fattening feedlot, invisibly incarcerated by FDA policies for the purpose of siphoning off my health if necessary and definitely my wealth to corporations I would avoid it I could see them. The proposed regulations are repugnant. I call upon all elected officials to whom this letter is copied to take seriously their duties to uphold public safety and to do whatever is necessary to contain this attack on the citizens and on the environment of this country.
