Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to encourage you to grant petition 98P-0151/CP1 to 
prohibit the slaughter of downed animals.  In addition to the 
inhumanity of torturing further these hapless animals, the meat of 
these animals poses a grave risk to human lives.  As a pediatrician 
who specializes in Nutrition and Gastroenterology for children, I am 
appalled at the entry of bacteria and possiblly "slow viruses" like 
Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy into the food supply of children and 
adults in the United States.  At a bare minimum, these animals who 
are too sick to stand should not be consumed by our human population.
