From: Cynthia Embree-Lavoie [celavoie@servicenetinc.org] Sent: Sunday, January 14, 2001 10:23 AM To: 'FDADockets@oc.fda.gov' Subject: Docket #98P-0151/CP1 Ladies & Gentlemen: I am writing to urge you strongly to grat petition #98P-0151/CP1, prohibiting the slaughter of "downed" farm animals. The slaughtering and marketing of sick and injured animals is appalling and unhealthful for a number of reasons. As these animals may carry disease that could be harmful to humans, it is a health hazard to have their bodies enter the human food chain. Additionally, it is an incredibly cruel and inhumane practice since, due to their weakened condition, it is nearly impossible to move or handle these animals humanely. Downed animals comprise a very small percentage of all livestock, so preventing their slaughter will not create any undue economic hardship on producers. Thank you for your consideration. Sincerely, Cynthia Embree-Lavoie, 85 Amherst St., Chicopee, MA 01013
