From: angel@gv.net Sent: Wednesday, October 18, 2000 5:44 PM To: FDADockets@oc.fda.gov Subject: Docket number 98P-0151/CP1 Dear Dockets Branch, We urge you to grant the petition to prohibit the slaughter of downed animals Docket number 98P-0151/CP1. Animals that are to sick or injjured to stand should not be used for the human food chain. Some downed animals may be afflicted with "Mad Cow Disease" It is impossible to move downed animals humanely and they are pushed with tractors or dragged with chains causing more damage. Removing the market for downed animals will provide an incentive for the industry to prevent downed animals in the first place and they only comprise a small percentage of animals slaughtered. Prohibiting their marketing will cause no undue economic hardship. Please do the humane thing and grant this petition. Sincerely Marie & Jim McNitt Grass Valley, CA
