I am writing to urge you to grant our petition to prohibit the slaughter of downed animals - DOCKET # 98P-0151/CP1. It is not only cruel and inhumane to try and transport these animals that can't even stand up as well as beating them or dragging them at the Slaughterhouse and many are left to die slowly, but these helpless animals should not be allowed to enter the human food chain. There is an increased risk for bacterial contamination and even evidence that some downed animals may be afflicted with a form of BSE. These pitiful animals comprise a very small percentage of animals slaughtered and prohibiting their marketing will cause no undue economic hardship. industry experts have estimated that 90% of downed animals can be prevented with better care and handling. All we are asking is that these animals be treated humanely and that doesn't take anymore time that abusing them does! Even though they are destined to be slaughtered there is no valid reason to abuse them. Please grant this important petition for the helpless animals and for all of us out here who worry about these creatures. God gave us animals to care for NOT to abuse! Thank you for your time and attention to this Docket# 98P-0151/CP1.
