FDA Commissioner Jane Henney Dockets Management Branch (HFA 305) Food and Drug Administration 5630 Fisher's Lane, rm. 1061 Rockville, MD 20852 RE: Docket No. 00N-1396, and 00D-1598 Dear Ms. Henney, I urge you to reconsider your new rule and mandate the labeling genetically engineered (GE) foods. Informed consumer choice is a principle highly valued by Americans. Your new rule runs counter to that, and is an insult to consumers' intelligence. If food sellers are concerned that GE labeling will scare off consumers, it is their prerogative to either stop using GE ingredients or promote the benefits and safety of GE to alleviate consumer's concerns. Your decision basically says, "We know you don't trust this stuff, but we aren't giving your a choice!" Not only is that grossly unfair to consumers, but it is also a disservice to the biotech industry, which will only be meet with greater skepticism from consumers as a result of this 'forced feeding' policy. GE foods should be required to win consumer approval by successful marketing like any other product in a free market. This is not possible without informed consumer choice.
