These bacterial strains can cause serious disease in people and are difficult to treat. Antibiotic resistant salmonella in chickens is a case in point. According to estimates by the Union of Concerned Scientists, the use of antibiotics in animal feed may far exceed that used in crops. It is high time that the FDA create a system to monitor agricultural antibiotic use in this country. The rational use of antibiotics is critical in the war against infectious disease.
