Please grant petition to prohibit the slaughter of downed animals. It should be obvious that animals too sick or injured even to stand should not be allowed to enter the food chain. Also there is evidence that some downed animals may be inflicted with BSE, which has been linked to fatal human illness. And it must be impossible to move downed animals humanely, so they end up with injuries like abrasions, and broken bones, and torn ligaments. I have read that industry experts have estimated that 90% of downed animals can be prevented with better care and handling. So removing the market for downed animals will provide an incentive to industry to prevent downed animals in the first place. Thank you, sincerely, Felicity Brach, 32 Tartarian Circle, Rochester, N.Y. 14612.
