Not just because of the health risks, but because it provides a market that supports the mistreatment/mismanagement of livestock. Animals who are too sick or injured to stand should not be allowed to be slaughtered for human consumption. They may pose unknown health risks if they are ill (ie what happened in the UK or worse!) that we won't know about until years after the fact. There's greater risk of bacterial contamination and disease to humans by eating downed meat. The animals cannot be moved humanely while alive, and are typically pushed with tractors or dragged with chains - resulting in injuries that range from bruises and abrasions to broken bones and torn ligaments... not the most pleasant way to live out your last moments. Prohibiting the marketing of downed animals will not cause undue economic hardship, and industry experts have estimated that 90% of all downed animals can be prevented with better care and handling. Removing the market for downed animals will provide an incentive to the industry to precent downed animals in the first place. Thank you for your time. Cathryn Dodd P.O.
