Like many Americans, I am extremely concerned about the saftey of these products, and I am particularly concerned about the potential environmental impacts of crops grown with genetically modified seeds. Given the widespread and growing use of this technology in American agriculture, it makes the most sense from the perspective of human and environmental health and saftey to require pre-market testing for GM-foods. From an economic perspective, it would make help ensure that the market share of American farmers abroad does not decline as a consequence of strong concern in other countries about GM foods. In addition to pre-market safety testing, I would also urge the FDA to consider mandatory labeling to protect consumers right to know what it is they are purchasing. I would further urge the FDA to require biotech companies to assume liability for any harms their foods may cause as a further incentive for them to consider the saftey of the products they market.
