My understanding is that the FDA's most recent proposals concerning food containing bioengineered crops includes the following:
1. The FDA would review data about these crops before public sale of the food in a period of 120 days
2. Producers' labeling of such food as bioengineered would be voluntary
I laud the FDA's intention to review such bioengineered components before public sale. However, I strongly urge the FDA to make labeling of food containing bioengineered crops MANDATORY. As a consumer, I have a right to know whether food on the market contains such matter. I do not wish to purchase foods from companies that use bioengineered crops. I would think that the FDA, as a government body, would respect this wish, which is shared by many consumers.
Moreover, I think such food labels should be as direct and concise as possible. For instance, genetically engineered, genetically modified, and bioengineered reveal more to the lay public than a vague term like derived through biotechnology.
Thank you for your attention.
