From: Robert R. Bell [hazmatter@excite.com] Sent: Wednesday, January 24, 2001 5:05 PM To: fdadockets@oc.fda.gov Subject: Docket # 00N-1396 and 00D-1598 Dear Commissioner Henney, The proposed Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations fail to require labels or safety tests on genetically engineered (GE) food. I would like to know what is in my families food instead of protecting the economic interests of biotech corporations. Labeling GE foods would give me the choice of choosing the food I eat and my family members eat using any criteria I choose. I do not like to be force fed someones experiments. By refusing to require both labeling and mandatory safety testing of foods, the FDA is using consumers as the test lab animals at no cost to them. Further this experimentation without consent ignores the recommendations of the Biotechnology Consultative Forum, who in December urged the US to require mandatory labeling of GE foods. Labeling food nutritional data hasn't damaged corporate profits and if prior testing and labeling is required, the corporate food controllers will still make their profits. I urge you to reconsider this proposal and insure that GE foods are subject to pre-market testing and labeling. Americans have a right to make informed decisions about the food we consume.
