FDA Commissioner Jane Henney Dockets Management Branch (HFA 305) Food and Drug Administration 5630 Fisher's Lane, rm. 1061 Rockville, MD 20852 RE: Docket No. 00N-1396, and 00D-1598 Dear Ms. Henney, I am deeply dismayed at the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) proposed regulations on the labeling of genetically engineered (GE) foods. While it may be true that there is some potential in GE foods, their safety and efficacy has not been adequately demonstrated. The new rules are clearly favoring the manufacturers at the expense of American taxpayers and consumers. The voluntary labeling rules deny the consumer of our basic right to know what we are eating. Our family reads the ingredients label for every article of food we purchase in order to know item's nutritional content, and we appreciate very much the level of detail which the FDA has required. To withdraw from this position, which the FDA has so rigorously enforced over the last several years, sends the message that the FDA no longer cares about the American people and is willing to have them be guinea pigs for manufacturers whose primary concern is profit, not health. Every other civilized nation in the world has safety rules about GE foods, and these regulations would not only jeopardize the health and well being of American citizens, but would also make our trading partners think twice about remaining so. I urge in the strongest terms that the FDS not pass these rules into law. Sincerely, Caleb T. Deupree Caleb T. Deupree 1242 E.
