I strongly urge you to require labeling indicating whether foods have been developed using bioengineering. This technology is too new and needs to be verified by independent rather than industry studies. I am a small organic produce grower who hears from consumers throughout the season that they want the right to choose their food sources.
Additionally, my brother is disabled after having his body overloaded with toxic substances in his workplace. While he has detoxed to a large extent, he has developed numerous allergies to such common food as wheat which is found in the most uncommon processed food sources. He absolutely must know what is in his food contains or he becomes so ill he cannot take care of himself. Labeling is the only way he can avoid foods that may have the potential of making him sick. Others with poor immunosystems must also know what they are eating.
Labeling is not optional and Americans deserve to be protected by your agency. Please take note of these concerns and implement a mandatory requirement.
Sincerely,
Debbie McDonald
