Comments for FDA General
Questions
1. General Comments I am writing to urge the FDA to require the labeling of foods to indicate whether they have been developed using bioengineering. Food is such a fundamental part of life, and Americans must be allowed to have the choice about whether to purchase and consume bioengineered foods. Allowing food producers to decide whether they wish to label the foods will effectively take the choice away from consumers and will keep Americans in the dark about the food that we eat. I am not opposed to biotechnology per se, and I recognize that it has many beneficial applications. However, I agree with many scientists and an international coalition of governments that call for precautionary testing and strict regulation of genetically engineered products to prevent harm to human health and the environment.
