Comments for FDA General
Questions
1. General Comments I am very concerned about making drugs OTC and losing health insurance payments for the drug/s. While I understand and support the concept of making more drugs available OTC, thus eliminating the need to see a doctor or other professional, this action also lets health insurance companies off the hook from paying for the drug/s. I would suggest that if you are going to make more drugs available OTC, you should require health insurance companies to still pay/reimburse patients for the drug/s if a doctor certifies that the drug/s is medically necessary. I am sure you are considering this action to make more drugs available to people at a lower cost but it can also have the reverse effect. Insurance companies do not now pay/reimburse for OTC drugs and so any person covered by health insurance will incur higher costs if their current Rx drugs become OTC. Their insurance companies will no longer pay for drugs that they previously did pay for.
