I am writing about the labeling proposal regarding trans fatty acids (Federal Register of November 17, 1999 (64 FR 62746). I think it is important to have the trans fat amounts appear on the label, but I think it should be its own category, not lumped with saturated fat. It is my contention that this will only further confuse the consumer as more information comes out which shows that trans fat may behave physiologically in a similar way to saturated fats with respect to cholesterol, but may have differing physiological effects for other aspects. Please make trans fats a separate label category. Julie Miller Jones, Ph.D., L.N., C.N.S. Professor of Nutrition College of St. Catherine St. Paul, MN 55105
