From: Sent: Thursday, December 07, 2000 3:06 PM To: 'fdadockets@oc.fda.gov' Subject: LOTRONEX I am writing concerning the recent removal of Lotronex from the market. My friend, -------------------------, has suffered from IBS for several years. Lotronex was prescribed for her several months ago, and has given her a whole new life. Her constant diarrhea prevented her from enjoying the things in life that most of us take for granted. Going shopping, taking a walk, camping, fishing, even going to work some days, was impossible. Since she began taking Lotronex we have been able to share many happy moments going and doing things she never thought possible. Now that this drug has been taken away I fear that she will return to the semi-reclusive lifestyle she led before. From what I have read on this subject recently, the only ill effects from this drug involved persons who should not have been prescribed this medication in the first place, or persons that ignored major symptoms which should have been briefed by their physicians and/or pharmacists. I ask that the FDA research this drug further and authorize it for use in extreme cases such as my friend's. Perhaps with some type of special patient monitoring program Lotronex can continue to provide the quality of life that so many IBS sufferers deserve. Thank you for your time.
