[U.S. Food and Drug Administration]

A survey of U.S. nail technicians by Nails, a magazine for nail professionals and students, indicates consumers spend far more on artificial nails than on manicures. The graph on this page (illustrated with pictures of fingers sporting fancy nails) shows that spending on artificial nails in U.S. salons rose from just under $3 billion in 1993 to more than $4 billion in 1995, while spending on manicures remained under $1 billion during the same period.
