Pharmacokinetics of drugs and drug metabolites are the primary focus of Dr. von Bredow's research interest. All aspects of drug absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination may have a significant impact on drug residue contamination of animal derived food products. Drug transfer into dairy milk resulting from drug treatment of dairy cows during the process of lactation is of particular concern since it provides the possibility of exposing infants to drugs and metabolites at the most sensitive time in their life. The potential for the accumulation of significant drug concentrations in infants following the consumption of drug contaminated milk is a concern.

The pharmacokinetic evaluation of drugs and the effect of drugs at various biological fluid and tissue concentrations is dependant on the use of clinical subjects or on the use of a surrogate animal models. The development of suitable animal models to monitor physiological events at known drug concentrations is an inherent part of pharmacokinetics. The development of animal models which monitor the ability of drugs to be absorbed from milk, food products or drug formulations is a goal of the kinetics program.

The pharmacokinetic evaluation of drugs is also dependant upon very sensitive and specific analytical techniques for the determination of drug and metabolite concentrations in biological fluids and tissues. The presence of drugs and drug residues in tissues and biological fluids can also be accomplished with some diagnostic test kits which may be used to detect and evaluate whether the allowable levels of drug residues in animal derived food products have been adequately controlled. The validation and use of rapid immunoassay methods for the determination of the presence of drug substances is another aspect of the pharmacokinetics program.
