I have worked, for the Federal Government, in many settings, both while I was a student at the University of Maryland, and thereafter. Initially, while a student in Microbiology at Maryland, I worked at the USDA in a ruminant laboratory, doing anaerobic colony propagation, in glass roller tubes, of samples taken from test animals, as well as HPLC analysis of samples. Thereafter, and also while still a student at Maryland, I received a position with the Howard County Government, at the Little Patuxent Water Quality Management Center, to work in their water quality testing laboratory examining, both chemically and microbiologically, the quality of the effluent waters released from the facility.

My FDA career began, at the Bureau of Drugs, in a reproductive research laboratory where the focus was the study of the effect of Cholera Toxin and variations in light and dark on the pineal gland, Circadian Rhythms and the reproductive cycle in hamsters. My next employment, also with the Bureau of Drugs, was in an antibiotic testing laboratory doing plate assay and turbidimetric analysis on manufacturers’ lots of anitibiotics, using bacterial sensitivity as an endpoint. Next, I worked at the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, in a Virology laboratory, doing viral plaque assays, primarily on Pediatric, Enteric and Neurologic disease viruses. Much of my work centered on the collaborative immunization efforts of the FDA with CDC, the World Health Organization and the Pan American Health Organization. The efforts to end the threat of childhood diseases in this country and in "third world" countries, where many childhood illnesses cause death, was most gratifying. My most recent employment is at the Center for Veterinary Medicine, where I act as a support scientist, involved in the research programs of a Pharmacologist. The focus of this research is primarily immunotoxicology in large farm animals. My function is in support of the laboratory programs, utilizing cytokine assays, PCR, ELISA, PAGE, and Western Blots, to measure the immunotoxic effect of various drugs, in test animals.
