FDA has received a citizen's petition asking for revision to the current sunlamp standard, and regulatory actions affecting certain sunscreens and tanning accelerators. An FDA-wide interagency group, the Photosciences Network, has been charged with answering this petition. An action plan has been developed. OST will review the scientific issues, primarily related to induction of skin cancer from very large cumulative doses of UV from sunlamp exposures, to evaluate their relevance to the requested changes in the sunlamp standard. A letter has been sent to the petitioner stating that a response will be issued by mid-1998.
