Division of Biology

Director: Dr. Marilyn Lightfoote

The mission of the Center for Devices and Radiological Health is to ensure that the public continues to enjoy the benefits of modern medical and consumer technology. In support of this mission the Division of Biology is responsible for conducting research investigating the health effects associated with the use of medical and radiation emitting devices.

The Division of Biology conducts research in a number of different areas including;

The division of biology also performs biological risk assessments investigating the potential adverse effects of medical devices, including leachable and wear debris compounds, and ionizing and non ionizing radiation exposure.

Division of Biology staff provide support to other parts of the center by providing expertise in complex device reviews, development of consensus standards and regulatory guidance documents. The Division of Biology staff members are primarily biologists, chemists, and biomaterials scientists.
