Counterfeit Initiative
FDA announced a new initiative in July 2003 to address the increasing concern about the possibility of potentially unsafe counterfeit drugs reaching consumers. As part of this effort, FDA formed an internal Task Force to develop recommendations for steps to minimize the risk to consumers from counterfeit drugs.
The initiative is designed to better identify the risks and threats from counterfeit drugs, to establish a public and private coalition to fight counterfeiters, and to identify technologies and tools to aid in identifying, deterring and combating counterfeiting.
Following recommendations from the FDA Task Force and the public, FDA will issue a final report in January 2004 to outline public and private sector actions necessary to address the growing concern about counterfeit drugs.
