2000 FDA Science Forum: FDA and the Science of Safety: New Perspectives

"The Science of Safety" will be the theme for the 2000 FDA Science Forum to be held February 14-15 at the Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C. The Forum will highlight the multifaceted nature of FDA's science base and the essential role of science in its ability to promote public health in a changing technological environment.

In an address entitled "Science and the FDA," Commissioner of Food and Drugs Jane Henney, M.D., will discuss the importance of enhancing FDA's science base and using the very best scientific information and thinking to ensure that the broad range of products FDA regulates are safe and effective.

The forum will bring FDA scientists together with representatives of industry, academia, other government agencies, consumer groups, and the public to discuss the scientific and practical issues related to risk management.

In addition, a panel of leading health reporters and scientists will discuss how to communicate risk effectively to the media and the public, and the role of risk communication in risk management.

FDA Scientific Achievement Awards of Excellence in analytical science, laboratory science, review science and intercenter scientific collaboration will be announced as part of the second day's activities.

On February 15, a poster session sponsored by Sigma Xi, an international research society, will feature more than 150 posters in all areas of FDA science.
