              ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING ON OLESTRA

FDA's Food Advisory Committee and other outside experts will
meet Nov. 14-17 to discuss a safety review of olestra by FDA's
Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition. Olestra is a fat
replacer for snack foods that is in FDA premarket review. Also
on Nov. 17, the committee will discuss recommendations on foods,
such as some teas and dietary supplements, that contain ephedrine
alkaloid. The meeting will be held at the Holiday Inn, 2460
Eisenhower Ave., Alexandria, Va.
On Nov. 14-16, an olestra working group will discuss data
from the FDA safety review of olestra and consider whether all
issues have been addressed adequately. On Nov. 17, the full Food
Advisory Committee will review the group's findings and also
review reommendations from an Oct. 11-12 meeting on ephedrine
alkaloid containing foods.
Committee recommendations are not binding on FDA but are
carefully considered by the agency.
More details are available from Catherine DeRoever of FDA's
Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, (202) 205-4251.
