      PRESS AVAILABILITY:  FOOD SAFETY SURVEILLANCE PROJECT

     On Thursday, July 13, food safety experts from the Food and
Drug Administration, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
and the U.S. Department of Agriculture will announce a foodborne
disease active surveillance project the three agencies are
launching jointly.
     Michael Taylor, Acting Under Secretary for Food Safety, USDA;
Mitchell Cohen, Director, Division of Bacterial and Mycotic
Diseases, CDC; Kaye Wachsmuth, Deputy Director for Programs, FDA;
and Glenn Morris, Director, Epidemiology and Emergency Response
Program of USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service, will be
available to answer questions from the media at 1 p.m. in room
1609, South Agriculture Building, 12th and Independence Aves.,
S.W., Washington, D.C.  Also at 1 p.m., epidemiologists from
California, Oregon, Minnesota, Connecticut and Georgia, where the
program sites will be located, will be available by phone for
