                PRESS CONFERENCE:  NEW FOOD LABEL
     A press conference to announce implementation of federal rules
requiring explicit nutrition information on nearly all food labels
will be held Monday, May 2, at 1:30 p.m. in the first floor
auditorium of the Hubert H. Humphrey Bldg., 200 Independence Ave.,
S.W., in Washington. 
     Commissioner of Food and Drugs David A. Kessler, M.D., will be
joined by consumer and industry leaders and other officials to
announce education projects in partnership with FDA, including a
large-scale public awareness campaign designed to educate consumers
nationwide about the new food labels.  Television public service
announcements produced for this campaign will be shown for the
first time.
