STATEMENT: RECALL OF LIQUID ANTIBIOTICS
The Food and Drug Administration has announced a recall by Eli
Lilly and Co. of the liquid oral antibiotics Ceclor, Lorabid and
Keflex, because several containers have been found to contain a
foreign object.
Consumers should stop using these products and consult a
health care professional. The object -- a small plastic cap found
in four of the containers -- could cause choking.
If a therapeutic alternative is not readily available or
appropriate, patients or the health care professional are advised
to carefully check the medicine prior to administering to ensure
that it does not contain a plastic cap.
The company is recalling the products voluntarily. FDA is
investigating this matter in cooperation with other authorities.
Anyone who has found a foreign object in these products should
contact Eli Lilly at 1-800-545-5927.
Ceclor, Lorabid and Keflex are sold to pharmacies in powdered
form and reconstituted before being dispensed to consumers. There
is no known risk to patients who have completed therapy with
Ceclor, Lorabid or Keflex.
