Statement on Hepatitis A

Today, CDC announced that raw or lightly cooked green onions were associated with the hepatitis A illnesses in Pennsylvania.

FDA has been working cooperatively with CDC, and the states, to actively investigate the outbreaks in an attempt to determine the source of the green onions associated with the outbreaks and how they became contaminated, so that corrective action can be taken.

In response to these investigations, FDA has taken the following action:

FDA provides the following advice to consumers:

The regulations that FDA is developing in accordance with the Public Health Security and Bioterrorism Preparedness and Response Act of 2002, provide FDA with new authority to help improve our ability to contain and prevent outbreaks. These new regulations plus our increased presence at the border represent a significant enhancement of our safety and security activities.

FDA will take further action as needed and provide additional information as it becomes available.
