FDA’s Dr. Christine Taylor to Lead Special Nutrition Project for World Health Organization

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today announced that Dr. Christine Taylor, the Director of the Office of Nutritional Products, Labeling, and Dietary Supplements in FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, will be accepting a two-year assignment to head a special project on nutrition issues for the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva, Switzerland.

Dr. Taylor's new position, which is underwritten by the Department of Health and Human Services and the FDA, will be effective January 18, 2004.

During her time with WHO, Dr. Taylor will develop approaches that will help this United Nations organization assess food-related health risks more effectively. She will work with leading international food science experts and organizations to develop nutrition "risk analysis" models.

Her work will also involve coordinating all the various food initiatives within WHO, including nutrition and disease surveillance. This coordination is critical to strengthening WHO's overall health risk assessment activities.

“Christine Taylor is an excellent choice for this assignment and will be able to make significant contributions to the agency's goal of achieving meaningful international harmonization on food safety and nutrition issues,” said FDA Commissioner, Mark McClellan, M.D., Ph.D. “She has developed an international reputation for her expertise in nutrition science, food labeling, and other food policy issues, and will advance global efforts to improve the safety and nutrition of food.”

The Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition is making arrangements for providing leadership for the Office of Nutritional Products, Labeling, and Dietary Supplements during Dr. Taylor’s work with WHO, and will provide further details before Dr. Taylor begins her assignment at WHO.
