FDA CONSOLIDATION:
AGENCY PLANS FOR OFF-SITE WASTE DISPOSAL

The Food and Drug Administration has been receiving
inquiries about its plans for waste disposal when it
consolidates. The following can be used to respond to questions:
The agency has decided that when it consolidates its
facilities in Montgomery and Prince Georges Counties in Maryland,
it will dispose of all waste off site and will no longer need on-
site incinerators.
In planning for its future needs, FDA recognized off-site
waste disposal as the most economically sound approach.
Community concerns in both counties about building a new
incinerator also were considered by the agency in reaching its
final decision.
FDA currently incinerates research animal carcasses at its
Center for Veterinary Medicine facility in Beltsville, Md.
Medical and other waste currently are shipped off site. Until
its new facilities are complete, FDA will continue incinerating
the carcasses on site in accordance with U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency and state of Maryland rules and regulations.
