McClellan to Headline FDA's 9th Annual Science Forum: Protecting America's Health

"Protecting America's Health" is the theme for the 2003 FDA Science Forum to be held April 24 - 25 at the Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C. This is the agency's premier, annual scientific event to communicate with the broad range of FDA's constituents about FDA's science-based mission of promoting and protecting the public's health. The forum is open to the public and includes a wide audience within FDA, the outside scientific, industry, health care, patient, and consumer communities.

This year's Science Forum will address several priority areas for FDA including risk assessment and risk management, progress in developing new therapies against cancer, and crucial federal public health initiatives in the aftermath of 9/11/01. Some of the topics to be discussed include: bioinformatics, detecting biological and security risks, food and pharmaceutical tampering and counterfeiting, therapeutic and prophylactic strategies for countering terrorism, bioterrorism risk and the nation's food supply, emerging issues in risk communications, and other applications of novel and emerging science issues.

Among those invited to speak at the forum are Tommy G. Thompson, Health and Human Services Secretary; John Graham, Ph.D., Office of Management and Budget, Administrator of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs; Elias Zerhouni, M.D., Director of the National Institutes for Health; and Mark B. McClellan, M.D., Ph.D., Commissioner of Food and Drugs. Others scheduled to make presentations include experts from the FDA, the NIH, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Department of Defense, as well as scientists from major universities and industry labs.

During the first day's activities, FDA will announce its Scientific Achievements Awards, the highest science award FDA bestows. Both days will feature a scientific poster session and full exhibition of internal and external scientific products and services; as well as a job fair where representatives from all areas of FDA will be available to discuss opportunities to join FDA and help carry out its public health mission.
