Tobacco Products

This Week in CTP – September 26, 2013

Announcing New Tobacco Product Review Decisions, a Retailer Training Video, and an Upcoming Webinar with CTP’s Director Mitch Zeller

Today, FDA issued additional tobacco product review decisions, allowing the sale and marketing of four new tobacco products through the substantial equivalence pathway. FDA issued orders for two HBI International roll-your-own tobacco papers and tips, including Elements Aficionado 1 and ¼, and Elements Aficionado KS Slim. In addition, FDA issued orders for two Republic Tobacco roll-your-own filtered cigarette tubes, including Top Regular 100MM and Top Gold 100MM.

FDA determined these products to be “substantially equivalent” to the predicate products to which they were compared. FDA concluded that, the differences between the new and predicate tobacco products are such that the new products do not raise different questions of public health.

For more information on all our substantial equivalence actions, visit our Tobacco Product Marketing Orders webpage.

In an effort to further retailer compliance with tobacco product regulation, FDA has produced an educational training video, along with a webinar promoting the video, entitled, “Sale to Minors: Age and ID Requirements for Sales of Regulated Tobacco.” This new tool was developed to assist industry and retailers in protecting America’s youth by keeping tobacco products out of the hands of kids. Specifically, the video educates the viewer about the legal requirements prohibiting the sale of regulated tobacco products to anyone under the age of 18 and how to check customer date of birth using a valid photo ID at point of sale for those under 27.
