Announcing New Federal Register Notices

Today, FDA published a notice in the Federal Register announcing both a workshop to be held on July 30-31, 2013 and the opening of a public docket to obtain scientific information on the chemical analysis of tobacco products. The workshop will focus on understanding the testing of tobacco filler and smoke from cigarettes, roll-your-own (RYO) tobacco, and smokeless tobacco products for specific chemicals. The analyses of tobacco products include developing test methods and evaluating method performance to ensure the results of the analyses are reliable and accurate. Individuals who wish to attend the public workshop at CTP or view the free webcast must register by close of business on July 1, 2013. On May 31, FDA published in the Federal Register a proposed rule, “Requirements for the Submission of Data Needed to Calculate User Fees for Domestic Manufacturers and Importers of Tobacco Products.” The proposed rule would require domestic manufacturers and importers of tobacco products to submit data needed to calculate user fees for tobacco products. Currently, FDA obtains necessary market share information directly from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and uses this information to assess user fees that fund FDA’s regulation of tobacco products. The proposed rule would ensure that FDA continues to have the information needed to assess and collect tobacco product user fees when the USDA program sunsets at the end of Fiscal Year 2014.
