Quirch Foods Co. Issues a Voluntary Alert on Uneviscerated Salted Smoked Split Herring Packed in 18lb Wooden Boxes, Due to a Possible Clostridium Botulinum health risk.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - November 18, 2011-Quirch Foods Co. of Miami, FL is voluntary recalling a lot of Cap-Pele Herring Export, Inc brand, Salted Smoked Split Herring, Plant Reg # 4108-2931, Processor: Petite Cap Fisheries Ltd. 2015 Route 950, Petite-Cap, NB, E4N 2H5,Canada. A sample collected by FDA at a Florida Distributor was found to be uneviscerated. Clostridium Botulinum spores is more likely to be concentrated in the viscera than any other portion of the fish.

Botulinum spores can cause Botulism, a serious and potentially fatal food-borne illness.  Botulism can cause the following symptoms: general weakness, dizziness, double vision and trouble with speech and/or swallowing. Other common symptoms include difficulty in breathing, weakness of other muscles, abdominal distension and constipation. Any person who has consumed the Herring and is experiencing any of the symptoms mentioned above should seek immediate medical attention.

The product was distributed in 18 lb, 8.2 kg, bulk packed wooden boxes, with a “REG No 4108-2931” stamp.  The product was sold to supermarkets and a distributor in Florida, and St. Thomas VI and is packaged at retail per customer request.

No illnesses have been reported to date.

Distributors: Please notify your customers and arrange for the return or destruction of the product.

Retailers: Please post this information at point of sale for consumer notification.

Consumers are cautioned not to consume this product, even if it does not look or smell spoiled. The product should immediately be returned to the store where it was purchased.
