Sugar Foods Issues Allergy Alert on Undeclared Milk in The Farmers Market Butter & Garlic Crouton Products

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- May 1, 2009 - New York, NY -- New York, NY based company Sugar Foods Corporation announced a recall of 531 cases of The Farmers Market Butter & Garlic crouton product because the croutons may contain undeclared milk allergens. People who have an allergy or sensitivity to milk products are at risk for serious allergic reactions if they consume this product.

The Farmers Market Butter & Garlic croutons were distributed to Giant Eagle stores located in the Northeastern United States.

The product is packaged in a 5 oz. stand-up foil resealable package containing a yellow background, a full color picture of a salad and The Farmers Market logo with the words “Butter & Garlic Croutons” in black print on the top. The UPC number on the packages is 3003430159.  The product is labeled with “Best if Used By” codes and the applicable “Best if Used By” date range is May 29, 2009 thru January 22, 2010.  There has been one reported allergic reaction at this time.

Consumers with an allergy to milk are advised not to consume this item and they are urged to return the item to a Giant Eagle store for a full refund. The safety and quality of Sugar Foods' products are of utmost importance to the company, and we are working closely with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to notify customers and recall these products as rapidly as possible.

To prevent recurrence, Sugar Foods Corporation has discontinued packaging this product until packaging materials with the correct allergen declaration are available and ready for use.  The company has reviewed all other labels to verify that all other potential allergens are identified.  The product subject to this recall is the only product found to have been labeled incorrectly.  The company’s findings and corrective action plans have been reported to the Food and Drug Administration.
