FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- January 30, 2009 -- Vitamin Cottage has initiated a voluntary recall of Vitamin Cottage packed fresh-ground peanut butter because we have received a call from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, reporting 3 cases of patients in late Dec 08/early Jan 09 who have the strain of salmonella that has been involved in the national recall from Peanut Corp of America. These patients filled out a food history report, and all 3 of them reported that they consumed Vitamin Cottage fresh-ground peanut butter, among other items. While this does not necessarily mean that they got salmonella from our fresh-ground bulk peanut butter, we are halting all sales and handling of the ground peanut butter at this time.
Peanuts from Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) have been implicated in an outbreak of salmonella for product shipping from their Georgia Facility. While none of the peanuts used in our stores to produce our fresh-ground peanut butter have been identified as contaminated since they were shipped to us from PCA’s Texas facility, we felt it prudent to cease selling the peanut butter as a precaution.
Vitamin Cottage requests that customers who have this product in their possession, please return them to any Vitamin Cottage location for a full refund, or destroy the product.
Vitamin Cottage has taken these precautionary steps to help protect our customers and will return this product to our stores only once it has been confirmed safe. “The safety of our customers is always our number one priority”, said Heather Isely, Executive Vice President at Vitamin Cottage Food Markets, Inc.
We will post current information on this situation on our website at www.naturalgrocers.com
