The Peanut Shop Recalls Chocolate Peanuts and Burnt Sugar Baked Bean Peanuts Because of Possible Health Risk
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- March 6, 2009- The Peanut Shop of Lansing, Michigan is issuing a voluntary recall of bulk chocolate peanuts and burnt sugar baked bean peanuts because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can results in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e. infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
These products were sold by weight from the Peanut Shop located at 117 S. Washington Ave, Lansing from bulk displays directly to retail customers in small bags or boxes. All chocolate peanuts sold prior to February 12, 2009 and burnt sugar baked bean peanuts sold prior to February 23, 2009 are currently under recall.
The recall was initiated after the company was notified by its suppliers that the products received may have been manufactured using peanuts processed by Peanut Corporation of America’s facility in Blakely, Georgia. The Peanut Shop has informed FDA of its actions and is fully cooperating with the Agency.
The company has not received any consumer illness complaints associated with its products; however, it is taking these precautionary steps out of an abundance of caution. Customers who have purchased chocolate peanuts prior to February 12th and burnt sugar baked bean peanuts prior to February 23rd should return any unused product to the store where they were purchased for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact Tammy at 517-374-0008.
