FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- February 3, 2009 -- Stewart’s Shops of Saratoga Springs, NY, is recalling this single flavor of dip ice cream from its shops.  After previously indicating there was not a problem, our vendor now tells us that an ingredient has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. This action is a result of the PCA expanded recall of January 28, 2009 for all products manufactured in their Blakely, Georgia facility since January 1, 2007.

Salmonella is an organism, which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.  Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.  In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e. infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.  For more information on Salmonella, please visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Website at http://www.cdc.gov.

Caramel Candy Bar Ice Cream was distributed in 3 gallon boxes bearing Plant # 36-3918 directly to Stewart’s Shops in New York and southern Vermont.

Stewart’s has had no reports of any illness to date.

Since it has been removed from sale and was sold at the dip counter as dip ice cream in cones and dishes, it is assumed that what has been sold has been consumed.

If for some reason you have Stewarts Caramel Candy Bar ice cream in your home, please return it to the shop where it was purchased for a full refund.  Consumers with questions can contact Stewart’s Shops Consumer Affairs at 518-581-1201 x2130.
