Savoy Extraordinary Snacks Announces Nationwide Voluntary Recall of Certain Peanut Containing Products
Savoy Extraordinary Snacks, LLC
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Somerville, NJ February 2, 2009 – Savoy Extraordinary Snacks, LLC in cooperation with the FDA is announcing a voluntary recall of certain peanut containing products because they may have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled products contain roasted peanuts supplied by Peanut Corporation of America, which has just announced an expansion of a voluntary recall covering all peanut products made in their Blakely, GA plant since January 1, 2007. Peanut Corporation of America is currently the focus of an ongoing investigation concerning recent Salmonella outbreaks. Savoy has not received any reports of illness connected to any of these products.
Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
Savoy Extraordinary Snacks is currently in the process of notifying all of its customers who have received the products in question and directing them to remove the affected products from their distribution. The products are sold nationwide in bulk pack cases to be deployed in retail merchandisers for consumption.
