FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE --Richland Center, WI -- January 21, 2009 --- This is a status update to the January 13, 2009 announcement by Richland Hills of our voluntary recall of Richland Hills sliced apple products because of the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems.  Although healthy individuals may suffer only short term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

The use by dates of 1/26/09, 1/27/09, 1/28/09, 1/29/09 and 1/30/09 are being expanded to include use by dates of 1/30/09 or before.

Sliced Apples were distributed in Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Iowa and Louisiana through retail stores, food service and fast food outlets.

Product is in packages labeled Richland Hills Organic Sliced Apples 4 oz, Richland Hills Honeycrisp Sliced Apples 4 oz, Richland Hills Apple Dippers 4 oz, Richland Hills Organic Sliced Apples 6 oz, Crunch Pak Organic Slices Apples 6 oz, and Richland Hills Apple Nibblers 2 oz ; also Pearson Foods fruit trays that contain apples 6.5 oz, 12 oz, 24 oz, 36 oz and 48 oz with sell by dates of 1/19/09 or before; also Richland Hills food service sliced, diced, quartered and half apple packs in cartons labeled Richland Hills containing 2 oz, 2.4 oz, 3 oz, 2 lb and 10 lb packs.

There have been no confirmed illnesses reported to date.

Consumers who have purchased Richland Hills apple products are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.  Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-800-811-8088.
