Osage Pecan Company Recalls Raw Spanish Peanuts and Roasted and Salted Spanish Peanuts Because of Possible Health Risks

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- March 4, 2009 -- Osage Pecan Company of Butler, MO is recalling all Raw Spanish Peanuts and Roasted and Salted Spanish Peanuts sold under the label Osage Pecan Company in 1 pound packages and 30 pound cases between the dates of September 22nd, 2008 and February 1st, 2009. These peanuts were produced at Peanut Corporation of America in Plainview, TX which is under investigation for salmonella contamination.
No illnesses have been reported from Osage's Raw Peanuts or Roasted and Salted Spanish Peanuts and all independent testing done on Osage Raw Peanuts have tested negative for salmonella.
Osage is issuing this recall as a precautionary safety action.
No other Osage Peanut products are a part of this recall.
Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which maybe bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected sneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
Consumers who have purchased Osage Raw Peanuts or Roasted and Salted Spanish Peanuts between the dates of September 22nd, 2008 and February 1st, 2009 may return them to Osage Pecan Company for a full refund.
