FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- March 6, 2009 -- DSD Services, Inc. of Shiner, Texas is voluntarily recalling Mega Snax Brands of 5.5oz Munchy Trail Mix, 9.0oz Texas Trail Mix, 9.0oz Tropical Trail Mix, and 4.25oz Pacific Sunrise Mix with expiration dates in December 2008 because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled product(s) contain peanut products supplied by Peanut Corporation of America, which has recently announced an expansion of a voluntary recall covering all peanut products manufactured and distributed from their Plainview, TX plants. Peanut Corporation of America is currently the focus of an ongoing investigation concerning the recent Salmonella outbreak.
Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
These four trail mix products were distributed via Convenience Stores primarily in Texas, with much lesser quantities having been shipped to Oklahoma and Louisiana.
The Munchy Trail Mix, Texas Trail Mix, Tropical Trail Mix, and Pacific Sunrise Mix are marketed in clear plastic bags with an attached header card with the name of the specific product on the card. The UPC code for all four of these items is 8 10106 00912 4. The expiration dates are marked in blue ink on the back of the package. Only packages with an expiration date in December 2008 are affected.
No illnesses associated with this product have been reported to date, nor have there been any illnesses reported with any Mega Snax products ever in the history of the company.
Consumers who have purchased Mega Munchy Trail Mix, Mega Texas Trail Mix, Mega Tropical Trail Mix, or Mega Pacific Mix with an expiration date in December 2008 are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 361 594 4114.
