Community Food Co-op Recalls Bulk Peanuts and In-Store Ground Bulk Peanut Butter Because of Possible Health Risk
Jeff Voltz, General Manager
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- March 6, 2009 -- Community Co-op of Bellingham, WA is recalling bulk peanuts and in-store ground bulk peanut butter because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. This voluntary recall is in response to the expanded recall of all peanut products manufactured by Peanut Corporation of America’s GA and TX facilities because they may be contaminated with Salmonella. Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
