Charlie's Specialties Announces a Voluntary Recall of Peanut Containing Items Due To a Possible Health Risk

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE --Hermitage, PA - February 6, 2009 - Charlie’s Specialties, Inc announced that it is initiating a voluntary recall of peanut butter filled Whoopee Pies in response to the expanded recall involving all peanut products produced by Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) in the Blakely, Georgia facility since January 2007. These products are being recalled out of an abundance of caution as they may have contained product manufactured by PCA who is the focus of an ongoing investigation by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) concerning a recent salmonella outbreak.
Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy people infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e. infected aneurysms), endocarditic, and arthritis.
The products impacted by the voluntary recall are as follows:

Description: 4 oz individually wrapped peanut butter whoopee pies

Item Code 41751 – Chocolate Bobbs with peanut butter filling
Description: 4 Chocolate Bobbs in a clear plastic clamshell type container, commonly sold through supermarkets
UPC Code 6-11690-41751-3
The products are sold in supermarkets, convenience stores, and other retail locations in Ohio and Pennsylvania. No other Charlie’s products are involved in the recall. No illness or problems have been reported to date in connection with these products.
Consumers who have purchased these products are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-877-346-2350.
