Broughton Foods Recalls 56 Ounce Scrounds of Premium Peanut Caramel Crunch Ice Cream Due to Expanded Recall by Peanut Corporation of America

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Marietta, OH (February 3, 2009) -- Broughton Foods in Marietta, Ohio is voluntarily recalling 56 ounce scrounds of Broughton Premium Peanut Caramel Crunch ice cream printed with a date of January 1, 2008 or later (printed as MM/DD/YY) and a Universal Product Code (UPC) of 7088002346. This recall was initiated because the affected product contains peanut ingredients supplied by Peanut Corporation of America which may be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in children, elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. Broughton Foods has received no reports of illnesses related to the affected product. No other Broughton Foods products are involved in this recall.

The recall involves approximately 2,752 units of the affected product, which was distributed in Southern Ohio, West Virginia (excluding the panhandle), Eastern Kentucky, and the towns of Covington and Clifton Forge in Virginia through numerous retail outlets.

HOW TO IDENTIFY THE RECALLED PRODUCT

This recall includes 56 ounce scrounds of Broughton Premium Peanut Caramel Crunch ice cream printed with a date of January 1, 2008 or later (printed as MM/DD/YY) and a UPC code of 7088002346. Consumers can find the date on the rim of the lid and the UPC code on the end of the package. No other Broughton Foods products are involved in this recall.

Broughton Foods has ceased distribution of the affected product. Consumers who have this product should not consume it.  They should discard it and may return the product package to the place of purchase for a full refund or exchange.  Consumers with questions can contact the Company at 1-877-234-0022.

The Ohio Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration have been notified of this voluntary recall.
