Boston Cookies Announces Recall of Vegan Peanut Butter Cookies and Brownies
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- February 5, 2009 – Somerville, Massachusetts, based Boston Cookies announces a voluntary recall of Boston Cookies Peanut Butter Cookies and brownies as a precautionary measure due to the extended recall of Peanut Corporation of America’s Blakely, Georgia facility, which is the subject of an FDA investigation concerning the recent Salmonella outbreak.
Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the frail or elderly, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
The recalled cookies may contain peanuts supplied by Peanut Corporation of America. The products are sold at health and natural food stores, convenience stores and grocery stores in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York, and New Jersey.
Included in the recall are:
ITEM #: 3003 – PEANUT BUTTER COOKIES – WEIGHT: 3.5oz.
· All sell-by Dates up to and including: 04/21/2009
ITEM #: 4009 – PEANUT BUTTER – SNACK PACK - WEIGHT: 8.5oz.
· All sell-by Dates up to and including: 03/06/2009
ITEM #: 6003 – PEANUT FUDGE BROWNIE – WEIGHT: 2.75oz.
· All sell-by Dates up to and including: 01/18/2009
No other Boston Cookies or brownies are included in the recall.
Customers who have purchased any of the affected peanut butter cookies or brownies within the dates mentioned above are advised not consume these items and may return them to their place of purchase. There are no reported illnesses associated with these peanut butter cookies.
